What to Do When You Can't Hit the Beach on the Outer Banks
Hey everyone! Im making this video in light of the most recent beach conditions topped with storms this week. I always feel bad for the people that come here for vacation and beach conditions are a little on the rough side. So imagine you've made it to the beautiful Outer Banks, but Mother Nature has other plans. Maybe it's those dangerous rip currents keeping everyone out of the water, or perhaps it's one of those classic OBX rainy days. In this video im gonna cover a few fantastic alternatives that'll help savor your vacation fun and memories
Look, we've all been there. You're staring at those red flags on the beach, watching the waves crash, and your kids are asking "When can we go swimming?" The truth is, the ocean demands respect, and when conditions are dangerous, there are plenty of other ways to make amazing vacation memories on the Outer Banks.
Destination Fun - Your Rainy Day Hero
Let's start with Destination Fun in Kill Devil Hills. This place is absolutely clutch when you need to get the family out of the hotel room. We're talking laser tag in a pirate-themed arena called Smuggler's Cove – and trust me, adults get just as competitive as the kids here.
They've got this incredible 3D black light mini golf course that'll blow your mind. The colors pop like nothing you've ever seen, and it's honestly Instagram-worthy. Plus, there's a massive arcade with over 50 games. Fair warning though – those redemption prizes can add up fast, so maybe set a budget beforehand.
Destination has recently upgraded their facility and added some cool new games and recreation and is one of the few kid friendly establishments
Jumpmasters OBX - Bounce Your Way to Fun
Now, if you really want to wear everyone out, head over to Jumpmasters in Manteo. This is the only trampoline park on the Outer Banks, and it's massive – we're talking 14,000 square feet of pure entertainment.
Your kids can practice flips into foam pits, battle it out on the trampoline dodgeball court, or test their skills on the ninja warrior course. And here's something cool – they even have axe throwing for ages 10 and up. Don't worry, it's completely safe and supervised.
After a session here, you'll sleep like a baby, which is always a win on vacation.
North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island
Here's where you can still experience the magic of marine life even when the ocean's off-limits. The NC Aquarium near Manteo is absolutely incredible, and honestly, it might be even better than swimming with the wildlife.
The centerpiece is their "Graveyard of the Atlantic" exhibit – a 285,000-gallon tank with sand tiger sharks swimming around a replica of the USS Monitor. It's like being underwater without the danger.
But what really gets me excited is their STAR Center. This is where they rehabilitate injured sea turtles, and you can actually watch the recovery process. Your kids will learn more about marine conservation here than anywhere else, and it might just inspire the next generation of ocean protectors.
Don't skip the touch tanks – there's something magical about feeling a stingray glide past your hand or watching a bamboo shark cruise by. They've even got a fossil pit where kids can hunt for actual shark teeth.
The Elizabethan Gardens
When you need a peaceful break from high-energy activities, the Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo offers something completely different. These ten acres of beautifully landscaped gardens tell the story of the Lost Colony and Sir Walter Raleigh's era.
It's perfect for a leisurely stroll, and the statuary and seasonal blooms make for some beautiful family photos. The kids will love the Discovery Cottage and play area, while adults can appreciate the Italian Renaissance artwork and peaceful water views.
Pro tip: if you're visiting in December, their WinterLights festival is absolutely magical – definitely worth planning a trip around.
Try Your Luck at the Piers
Just because you can't swim doesn't mean you can't enjoy the water. The Outer Banks has some of the best fishing piers on the East Coast, and most of them don't require a fishing license – it's included with your pier pass.
Jennette's Pier in Nags Head is the longest at 1,000 feet and is perfect for families. It's operated by the NC Aquariums, so there are educational programs running throughout the day.
If you want more of a local vibe, check out the Outer Banks Fishing Pier in South Nags Head. Their Fish Heads Bar & Grill has a legendary 50-cent shrimp happy hour, and there's often live music. Even if the fish aren't biting, you're guaranteed a good time.
For something unique, head to the Bonner Bridge Pier at Oregon Inlet – it's actually made from a section of the old bridge. It's open 24/7 and offers some of the best views on the Outer Banks.
Making the Most of Plan B
Look, I know it's disappointing when you can't do exactly what you planned on vacation. But here's the thing – some of my best OBX memories happened when we had to get creative. These rainy days and rough surf conditions often lead to discovering hidden gems you never would have found otherwise.
While the highlight of The Outer Banks ist the beach – it's also got deep coastal roots embedded into the community, the history, the incredible seafood, and the unique experiences you can't get anywhere else. So embrace the adventure, try something new, and I guarantee you'll head home with stories that are just as good as any beach day.
Final Thoughts
One thing I personally would try to avoid on rainy days are restaurants. You are almost setting yourself up for frustration. If you still want to try some of the great food on the OBX I recommend getting in early like around 4pm, otherwise you might be waiting for around 2 hours to get a table. But if you have the patience there are a lot of establishments that are totally worth the wait and plus most of them have waiting areas that are well equipped with live music and adult beverages while you wait it out
Remember to check hours and make reservations where needed, especially during peak season. Most of these places get busier during bad weather, so planning ahead will save you time and frustration.
And hey, tomorrow might bring perfect beach conditions, but at least you'll have discovered some amazing backup plans for future trips. The Outer Banks always has something special waiting – you just have to know where to look.
Stay safe out there, respect those ocean conditions, and make some incredible memories. Thanks for watching, and I'll see you in the next one!
